The Information Technology department was founded in 1978, on the basis of the Higher Mathematics department, as “Applied Mathematics and Computer-Aided Management Systems”, led by Associate Professor Ya.Yo. Yorbekov. It was later headed by Associate Professor U.S. Sarimsaqov (1984–1989), Professor T.X. Xolmatov (1989–2005), Associate Professor U.A. Nazarov (2006–2017), A.A. Karimov, PhD (2017–2023), and since 2023 by K.M. Shaimov, PhD.
From 1999 the department was named “Informatics”, from 2011 “Informatics and Information Technology” and from 2015 “Information Technology”; on 1 May 2023 it was re-established under that name in the university's new organisational structure.
Today the department has seven full-time teaching staff: two PhDs and associate professors, two senior lecturers, two assistant lecturers and one trainee lecturer. Half of its staff hold degrees, and their average age is 39.
